It Begins

What's my story? What do I hope to accomplish here?

To put it simply, I like food. Food is good, but you already knew that. It's sad how often we eat boring crap and don't appreciate all the different tastes. Having spent some time in Europe, I've seen their passion for food and desire for freshness. There aren't a large supply of supermarkets all over the place, but there is a large supply of actual markets. Markets where fresh food is abundant. Where people pick up produce and smell it, where they talk to the fisherman about yesterday's catch, and where farmers flaunt some strong smelling cheeses.
Unfortunately, we now have WalMart and stores like it. Now I have nothing against these stores right to low prices and cheap products. The problem I have is that people try to find the cheapest deal on food with little regard for quality. We frequently don't look for the freshest product, but the cheapest. With a lack of concern for freshness, you miss out on taste. Many people don't know how much better something can taste when it hasn't been packaged and had additives injected into it. I want this blog to be an opportunity to share with you my passion for food. A chance to share restaurants I've been to, food I've eaten and made, and for you to share back. Let this be the beginning.

I agree Jake. In today's fast-past world we look for the easiest way out, which tends to be the fattest way out. We eat on the go with no regard to what we just put in our mouths. If we would take a moment and choose to cook instead of watch another episode of "Are You Smarter Than A 4th Grader" we would all be better for it. Some say those who eat together, stay together. I also say those who cook together grow together. I look forward to tomorrows menu!

I agree wholeheartedly, Jake! I love to cook too, especially after a trip to the Central Market in San Antonio, or any combination of local markets in a city. When I was at Vanderbilt in Nashville, there were independent and quasi-independent markets all over the place--my favorite one wasn't related to food at all, in fact, it specialized in flowers. I digress...

Whether it's a risotto I'm making or stuffed veal chops, I want the freshest produce, cheeses and meats available. But sadly, I walk away having spent way too much for such high quality ingredients. Of course, these are special meals, and if you want the best, you have to pay for the best. But in all seriousness, healthy, wholesome foods should be as readily and cheaply available as the crap that our SuperSize world dishes up to billions of people world-wide...

On a side note, I really miss getting to talk to you, Jake ... I hope we can reconnect sometime... your place or mine, however, I much prefer your environs to mine :-)

Best,
nkn

I agree. I am probably one of the frugalist people I know... but I appreciate good food. I would rather stay home and cook a modest meal than go to a mainstream restaurant and eat the same old crap.
